Yes we still have a blog!
Facebook has changed the way we interact on line. But I'm still not completely pleased with how mercurial and often shallow it is. A blog seems a little more personal and permanent and not so "sound-bite-ish" and "lite."
So I will try to blog some more -- both for the family and for other reasons. I also know my schedule, so we'll see . . .
One of the big changes this year was that when Trey went away to BYU, we rented out his (and Taft's) room to an exchange student from Hong Kong who attends Shoreline Community College. Her name is Mandy and we love having her in our home. And . . . it helps pay for Trey's college -- much needed. Probably need to do a different blog on that.
In any case . . . having the room rented sort of takes it off the options list for when people come to visit, or especially, when students come home from college. We thought of many options, one of which was to see what we could adapt with the playhouse off the deck in back. It will never be "up to code," but we figured we could do a few things (like fix windows broken by missed lacrosse shots . . .). Unfortunately, time and money were both short as we realized that this might be the best option for housing Trey while home from college. So we did the best we could.
We bought a good quality space heater. We hung a few pictures stored from the boys room. Stored a few things that didn't really need to be in there anymore. Hung some fleece over the drafty windows. Found a free bed through a friend who scours Craigslist-type things. And soon . . . Voila! The playhouse became the "Treyhouse" over Christmas.
And he actually loved it.

Peformances, part 2

For the last little while, Eliza has been working on First Arabesque, by Claude Debussy. With the help of a friend (who has a grand piano and recording equipment), we made the following.

I think she has a great feel for the music.

Ultimately this recording is going to end up as entry in an on-line piano competition in which people will vote (sort of American Idol-like). We'll let you know so you can cast your votes.

Performance

For his senior project, Trey decided to make a CD of him playing the guitar and singing -- including composing some of the songs. The word got out and he was asked to perform one of his original compositions at an event at the high school called "Tattoo Coffeehouse." Tattoo is the name of a book the school produces each year with the collected works of students -- poetry, short story, art, etc. The "Coffeehouse" night is when they invite students to perform their original work. Sort of like an open mic night at a coffeehouse, with poetry readings interspersed with music.

Our recording of his performance is below. Not bad for the kid who hid behind the pulpit the first few times he was asked to speak in primary and wouldn't give his talk because he was so embarrassed to speak in front of people.

One other piece of background. Trey wrote this song after watching the movie "Up." Those who have watched the movie I think will see the connection -- if you can pick up on the words. Sorry for the bad recording. All I had was my camera. I promise better recordings in the future.

Taft goes on a mission

OK, so I'm slow on posting. It actually happened pretty fast. Taft got his call the last week of September and had to report to the Mission Training Center on November 4, 2009 in preparation to go to the Argentine Buenos Aires South Mission. The last week of September is also the first week of school at the U of Washington -- and thus the first week of Institute for me (Todd). Taft also got a new job that week. It was a whirlwind preparation. Seemed like we were just sprinting for the 5 1/2 weeks we had to see him off.

Lisa and I decided that we wanted to go down with him, flying down a day before to just have some individual time with him, and hang out in Salt Lake for a day -- especially to take him through the Salt Lake Temple.

One of the fun little parts of the trip was that we had a special travel deal through Sam's Club that included a full size rental car. When we got there they had ready for us one of Taft's favorite cars -- a Dodge Charger. We had no idea that's what we would get. It was kind a fun. By the way -- it was 70 degrees while we were there on November 3rd and 4th -- no a cloud in the sky.

In addition to the temple we got to meet some general authorities (you'll have to ask us about that). And before the sun went entirely down we hike Ensign Peak -- a favorite place of ours from clear back when we lived in Salt Lake during the time Taft was almost 2 until he was almost 7 years old.

We decided we like the new MTC policy of curbside drop off. It was great to do it all in 3 minutes. Todd is fighting off the tears which probably explains why there isn't a picture of Lisa and Taft -- too emotional of a camera operator to press the button correctly. Plus . . . the MTC person was saying (very firmly): "Let's go! If you've said good-bye, let's keep it moving." (She is either a very NON emotional person, or she never had dropped off a son for 2 years.) But we kept it moving -- we didn't want any trouble at such a great event. But, of course, the picture of Taft says it all -- he's ready to go and anxious to get on with it. Sure it's hard to say good-bye -- we can't imagine not having him around for all he is to our family and for all he does -- but we wouldn't have him any other place doing any other thing. It's a deep mix of emotions -- both of which involve tears for parents.

Seattle Kid's Marathon

The Sunday after Thanksgiving there is a big marathon in Seattle that finishes in the old Memorial Stadium underneath the Space Needle. Since we've lived in Seattle (and probably before), they have held a "Kid's Marathon" in association with the full 26.2 mile one. Elementary school children are challenged to run 25 miles in the month of November, and then at this special event on Saturday morning (the day before the big 26.2) the kids run a 1.2 mile fun run -- thus running an entire marathon in the month of November.
Abigail has run the kid's marathon the last 2 years. Parents are issued the same number as the child and allowed to run with them. Lisa ran with Abigail the first year, Todd last year. This year the new Kindergarten student Thaddeus joined the event. To get ready for it, his big sister Eliza (age 14) ran with him to get his 25 miles in the month of November. And this year they added some other requirements -- reading 13 books and doing 13 special deeds of service.
So . . . this morning was the event. The temperature was in the low 40s, but we all bundled up. Todd ran with Thaddeus and Lisa ran with Abigail. Eliza was the photographer.
Lisa reported that Abigail ran steady but was a little nervous after last year when she got a little quesy at the end after running REALLY hard. But she put on a big kick at the end and left her Mom in the dust (and her Mom is a good regular runner).
Todd reports that Thaddeus ran the whole way except for one small part at the top of a formidable hill about halfway through. He was short of breath and so Todd said, "Let's walk and count to 25, and then we'll start running again." When we got to 20 he wanted to start and we ran the rest of the way. When we got to the stadium he put on an all out sprint and both of us raised our arms in victory as we crossed the finish line.
Afterwards they give each participant a space blanket, a bottle of water, a t-shirt, and then they go into exhibition all for handouts on fitness and other food samples.
We all had a good time. Special thanks to Eliza for training the not-always-anxious-to-put-in-his-miles Thaddeus. She earned her merit badge on this one. See picture at the end of a rainy run as well as the congratulatory hug at the end of the event.

This is a great event and I recommend it to other communities.

First Day of School!

The last couple of weeks have been the first days of school for the kids. For a long time it has been a tradition for us to take a picture of the kids on their first day of school.

This is Thaddeus and Abigail as they left the house

to go to Brookside Elementary. This year Thaddeus will be a kindergartner, with Ms. Harris and Abigail will be a fifth grader, with Ms. Nowak. (Abigail claims she is most wanted teacher of the fifth grade!)

Then we have Miss Eliza. She started her first day of high school as a freshmen at Shorecrest High school the year!

Also going to Shorecrest, Trey is starting his senior year!

This year Trevor has also returned to school. He entered the West Point Military Academy in June. The first six weeks were spent in a special boot camp training experience called Beast. Having completed that he has been in school for about a month now as a plebe. (Plebe is the affectionate nicknamed bestowed upon the freshman!)

Unfortunately the many pictures we have of our army man are not available to me at this moment, so I will publish a few pictures of his past adventure as soon as I can access some photos that will actually load onto this site!

Taft's Post

Hi, this is my first time writing on the blog, and I have a few things talk about from the last few months. First things, is that we car a new car. It is a Chrysler Town&Country, year 2005. It is white and very nice to drive in. Here are some pictures of our new van after I washed it.

Also I ran track this year. I was pretty successful. My event that i focused on is the 800. 2 laps around a track. I placed 7th at our District Qualifying meet against some of the best runners in the state. Then I went on to get forth place at districts With a time of 2:06. Then i got to go to state as an alternate for the 4x4 team. It was a lot of fun to watch the state athletes. I do have a video of my fastest 800 race, here it is... I am wearing green and have yellow shoes.

Other things that i have done this year. I wrote and illustrated a children's book about a prince that goes on a journey to find a princess. It was for my senior project. I graduated from high school. The Knowles 4x4 team got ran another race I got my eagle scout award. For my Eagle project i planted trees at a park called green lake. Happy Mother's Day from Eliza!

Hey there! Eliza here! For mother's day, I decided that there probably would not be a better present for Grammy Beth than to present her with an entry on the blog!!! :) yea!

Okay so on May 2 I was able to participate in an event called the Solo and Ensemble Contest. This event is for all the musicians in the Sno-King region. Kids from everywhere come and perform a piece for an adjudicator, who is a professional musician, and then receive a workshop of sorts on the piece that they performed. I performed twice, both vocally and on the piano. Vocally was more just for fun. I sang in a quartet with three of my friends but it ended up being very successful. The piano performance however was a lot more heavily weighted. The song I played was called Waltz in C# minor by Frederick Chopin, and was probably the most difficult thing I have ever played. But it too was successful and I received the highest score possible. This event was very helpful to my musical career and I was able to have a fun time with it.

My piano teacher has a recording studio in his house and has a cool little website where he puts recorded songs performed by his students. I had the opportunity to record the song I played for the Solo Ensemble and he has placed it on there. Last Saturday and Sunday I sat in front of the TV for 480 minutes in 2 days. We were watching General Conference. One of the things I played with during that time was clay. Snitch and Scout were down there, and they inspired me. I grabbed my big clump of yellow and started to make something.

I named my creation Sneetch!!!

On Friday, March 27, 2009 it was crazy hair day at school. Me having long hair knew I had to do something. So mom did my hair and this is how it turned out!!!!! Everybody loved my hair including me!!

Thaddeus Dale Knowles!!

Our house has a very unique character, our Thaddeus! Since our grandmother has insisted that every child do a blog entry regularly, little Thaddeus has been eager to do his blog. So this entry is going to be about things that Thaddeus picks himself to be recorded. (Eliza is doing all of the actual recording, with Thaddeus dictating.
This previous week, we rented the movie "High School Musical 3". Thaddeus being much like his older brother Trevor, can never just sit through the movie, he has to be doing what they are doing in the movie. The dance scenes in High School Musical 3 were highly inspiring to Thaddeus and when ever we watch it, he dances along. One night we decided to record some of our favorite dance moves from the song, "The boys are back".

When Thaddeus is not dancing, is modeling his unique fashions!!!

One night Thaddeus couldn't find any pants. Mom told him that there were pants downstairs and thaddeus being a little self-conscious about stripping through the house so he decided that a foam roll would be better!! Don't you just love him?!

Math Olympiad

On Saturday March 14, Mom and I went to the final math Olympiad competition at Shorecrest high school.When we got there, we signed in and went to the "opening ceremonies." the opening ceremonies included the rules and thank yous to sponsors. We then went to our assigned classroom and took the first individual test. After we finished that we had a 10 minute break and took another individual test. Then we had a snack and went back in our classroom and took an easier team test. My team included me, Schuyler and Michael peters (they're twins). we finished that test and took yet another break and team test. Finally we had finished taking our tests and went to eat lunch. As soon as we were done with lunch we went to the gym for entertainment and door prizes. The entertainment was fabulous. It was a group of kids doing circus tricks. They had tightrope walking, juggling, plus lots more. Finally came the time for awards. I tied for 5 in individual and my team tied for 4.
At school the next Friday we had a party/award ceremony. I got in the top 3 for 4 grade girls and I got 4 right on one of the monthly tests, so I got recognized for that. I also got a participation award. I had a lot of fun and I'm going to do it next year.

As promised to my grandmother, I Trey, am writing this week with the intentions of publishing information and pictures about my eagle project. My eagle project was planning a Christmas Party for the Seattle Spina Bifida Organization. I was put in charge of most of the responsibilities in the planning for this event. The project began on Dec. 5, a Friday night, when about 15 people came to our church building and helped set up the cultural-hall for the event. The next day, over 100 people showed up to have some Christmas fun. For the kids, there were craft tables, letters to write to Santa, cookie decorating, and a puppet show. The adults were welcome to enjoy all those too, but I created a most-difficult Christmas trivia quiz for them. Those who answered the most questions correctly won a prize (p.s.- no one got 100%). Overall it was a really fun event and all the volunteers had a wonderful time playing with the children. I must say it was the only eagle project in history in which there were more young women volunteering than young men. I am a couple merit badges away from completeting my eagle scout award. Stay tuned for that event. Here are some of the pictures:

Memories of an Old Man!

Hey Eliza Here! Doing the her duty on the blog! (for the record, the second time, since the last one was deleted second within completion!!!)

This week (Tuesday to be exact) we celebrate Daddy's 46 birthday!!! yeah!!! This wondrous occasion was celebrated with homemade pizza's! The pizza's were imitations of the famous ones from Christmas eve, as they did not have quite as many toppings, but they were yummy nevertheless!!!

This is Dads creation. And this is Dad enjoying his creation!

This year each child also completed a questionnaire for their knowledgeable father. This questionnaire covered various fun facts about the year he was their age. (For example: I did a little quiz on the year 1976 because that was the year he was 13) These questionnaires covered anything the child wanted, though most of them covered things like the top songs, super bowls, Olympics, world news, world leaders, world records...ect. Dad did pretty well on Taft and Trey's, and moderately well on mine, but we didn't even make quizzes for when he was 9 and 4 because we didn't think his memory would reach out that far!!!

Because some of the top songs of those memorable year were songs the children were not familiar with, mom and dad began education our minds with classic seventies literature (or in my words, the crazy hippiness of the seventies!!! man, the seventies were sooooo retro!!!!) Our little peruse through the seventies lasted a little longer than anticipated, and the rest of the night was spent cleaning up pizza mess and reliving the seventies!!

The Birds

Hello! This is Abigail doing my blog duty!!! I thought that it would be very easy to right an entry on the Knowles family's beloved pets!! Snitch is my bird. She is yellow and is snugly! She squawks like a fire alarm and is my baby dragon!! I got her about a year ago for my birthday and she has come a long way in becoming the favorite thing in my life! Towards the end of March (i think) Snitch broke her leg and a few toes. It took her about 2 and a half weeks to get better, and then she was fine. Mommy thinks she has arthritis in her foot that she broke. Lately I've been teaching Snitch some tricks and one of them is sitting on a boat in the bathtub. She also likes mirrors, listening to Wicked, waking up at 7:45 a.m., attention, scout, eyelashes, bells, and chewing on glasses. Scout is mom's bird. We got her about 1 and a half years ago. She is best friends with snitch. Scout doesn't snuggle and she certainly isn't yellow. She is white with black and blue marks. She is mellow and likes less attention. She also likes staying up late and waking up later than 9:30. She also likes Eliza's taste of music, the tallest shoulder, water and playing in water, being in her cage, bells and balls, hoods, music coming from the piano, and sitting in the tree.

Christmas Eve

Part 1 -- The Pizza
Homemade pizzas have been the tradition for sometime now in the Knowles family. We buy about any topping you can think of and everyone gets their own pizza. Rhodes dough is the crust. Spaghetti sauce for the base. Then the sky is the limit (or the amount of toppings we bought). Eliza and I do soy cheese. Homemade pizza is the best!! And the leftovers get us through Christmas Day and Boxing day!

Part 2 -- The Treasure Hunt
For some years now, I (Todd) have put together some kind of "treasure hunt" for a special Christmas Eve present -- which, remarkably enough always turns out to be pajamas. I think it's now officially called the "Pajama Treasure Hunt."
It's gets harder and harder each year to come up with creative places to hide them and creative clues to get them there. Last year was a "National Treasure" theme -- complete with a secret message written on the back of our framed copy of the Declaration of Independence (or maybe the Constitution -- I'll have to check. But I would have to check with a special light that will reveal the "invisible ink"). This year the weather limited my hiding places and my ability to go get special things for clues -- like ideas for invisible ink. I finally decided to work with the weather. I've included a video clip below of the discovery -- you'll see what I mean about working with the weather.
This year's clues centered around movies that each of the kids have watched . . . over and over again (usually as younger children). So each child got to be an expert for a clue. Nothing too spectacular -- but the clues were rather tough, very much riddle-like that took some thinking. But, as usual, they solved the mystery and uncovered the treasure.

Part 3 -- The Puppet Show
As a new feature this year, Abigail and Thaddeus put together a little puppet show that was sort of a take off on Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Thaddeus' contribution also included a "Boise State Bronco" puppet -- which he helped make. (All puppets were homemade by Thaddeus and Abigail from the cardboard core of a toilet paper roll. Mr. T.D. Knowles contribution to the dialogue was that when the reindeer games were played, they "played football." 2 other times in the story Abigail paused and Thaddeus added, "And they played football" and the stage went crazy for a minute. Pretty much had us in stitches. You might notice, by the way, the Boise State theme colors for the tie-dyed pajama shirts for the older members of the family. Pink tie-dye for the younger girls.

Part 4 -- The Christmas Message
I (Todd) finished the evening with a Christmas message from Luke 2. I emphasized the role of the angels in this story. It seemed to me that the last General Conference had a more-than-usual discussion of the ministry of angels. We had talked about it some in our family in the previous couple of weeks and this was one more opportunity.

I've been reading weather sites a little more often lately. I noted that in Seattle, Dec. 20 and Dec. 21 are equally the shortest days of the year. I believe it's the first day of winter. Not too hard to believe. See photo and video of outside our front door.

It started snowing about 4 p.m. on the 20th. It had more or less kept up until now (7 p.m.) on the 21st. Who knows how many inches. Church was cancelled. The Bishop made phone calls and got people in the ward together with others who live close and encouraged them to have sacrament meeting in designated homes. We only have one couple within hiking distance. They are in their 90s and mostly homebound anyway -- we go over about twice a month and bring them the sacrament on a regular basis. Taft and the Bishop's son went down and visited them and did the sacrament for them.
We did try to go visit somewhat as it let up a little this afternoon. We couldn't get the car on to the road from the side of the road -- we just spun and slid. Abandon plan. We might have made it if Trey and Taft both pushed, but we would've got stuck somewhere else. And we don't own chains.

The good part is that it really is pretty. And we didn't get another windstorm with it. Everyone has power. We just can't go anywhere. I suppose that's not entirely bad.

We may stay here until Christmas. Hopefully not, since Grandpa and Grandma Knowles are flying in on Christmas Eve and would like a ride from the airport.

Seattle Snow

O.K. This is the trial run. I'm not saying much this time (I may never say too much), but I'm trying it out. Today is a "snow day" in Seattle. When we moved here they told us that it only snowed every 7 years or so -- at least a big snow. Well . . . we are beginning our 3rd winter and EVERY SINGLE year we have had school-closing-don't-anyone-drive snow. Today is one of those days. So here's a photo or two and some video clips to verify it all. The pictures and video are in front of our house in our culdesac.
